From airport janitor to first class graduate: How one errand changed everything for Prince Dormenyo

In 2019, Prince Dormenyo finished senior high school with big dreams but faced an uncertain future. His single mother, who worked tirelessly to provide for him, couldn’t afford to send him to university.

Determined to create a better life for himself, Prince took on a janitorial job at Kotoka International Airport.

“It was a tough time watching my peers head to school while I stayed back, but I was determined. I gave my best at work, running errands and helping wherever I could. Little did I know, God was working behind the scenes,” Prince recalled in a post

While working at the airport, Prince caught the attention of the Emirates Airlines Ghana team. Moved by his story and determination, they decided to sponsor his education.

“They didn’t just listen to my story; they believed in me when I didn’t think anyone would,” he shared.

With their support, Prince enrolled in Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

Thriving at KNUST

Prince’s tuition, hostel fees, and a monthly stipend were covered thanks to the local Emirates team.

According to him, he was also provided with a laptop to aid his studies. But Prince didn’t just focus on academics. He quickly became a student leader and advocate, serving as Head of the 63rd KNUST SRC Academic Board, where he represented over 80,000 students. He initiated the TekSmartest Competition to promote innovation and academic excellence and played a key role in the 2024 E-Learning Week and the International Conference by the KNUST E-Learning Centre, advancing technology in education.

Prince also held multiple leadership positions including serving as Public Relations Officer for the Political Science Students’ Parliament, President of the Political Science Students’ Association, Majority Leader of the 5th Social Sciences Society Parliament, Campus Ambassador for Lead For Ghana, Member of the KNUST Debate Society, and Head of Communications for the Digital and Sustainability Experience 2024.

Even when he contested for the presidency of the Students’ Association of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and didn’t win, he saw it as a growth experience.

“That experience taught me resilience and the importance of staying true to my values,” he added

His efforts earned him recognition as a two-time Male Volunteer Finalist at the Vice Chancellor’s Excellence Awards.

In 2024, Prince Dormenyo graduated with First Class Honours in BA Political Studies from KNUST and shared his story on social media which has garnered comments and reactions from Netizens.

“Walking across that stage was more than a moment—it was proof that resilience and kindness can change lives,” he shared

Prince’s story reminds us all that no beginning is too humble and no dream is too big.

“To anyone facing delays or obstacles, remember that sometimes, the waiting season is preparation for something greater. Trust God, stay hopeful, and humble, and keep moving forward,” he pointed out.
