Ghana Twitter reactions to ECG proposing a 148% increase in electricity tariffs

A proposal from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) seeks to increase tariffs by a whopping 148%. The ECG asserts that an average increase of 7.6% in tariff over the next four years to cover Distribution Service Charges (DSC) is the sure way to ensure the company runs effectively.

ECG stated that the increase was necessary due to the gap in the Distribution Service Charges between cost recovery tariffs, PURC approved tariffs and the cost of completed projects.

The power distribution company emphasised that its financial sustainability depended on this action.

Ghana Twitter had some choice words for the ECG’s mentions. This comes as no surprise considering the record increases in fuel prices and the high-cost of living. Many Ghanaians are still reeling from increments in transport, food prices and basic utility services such as Water and Gas supply.

Here are some Twitter reactions to ECG’s proposal of a 148% tariff increase.
