Verda Annan is the Ghanaian Harvard student who’s got the internet abuzz after she donated her scholarship to her less privileged classmates.
Verda Annan an alumnus of Fitchburg School was awarded $40,000 as a General Excellence Award on their year group’s graduation. When she took her place on the dais, Verda stated that she appreciated the honour of being her school’s recipient of the award. However, she believed there were people to whom the money would be better used.
She said,”I am so very grateful for this, but I also know that I am not the one who needs this the most…I would be so very grateful if the administration would consider giving this excellent scholarship to someone who is going to community college.”
Her charitable act got her a spot with Steve Harvey on his “Steve on Watch” show. She reiterated that her act was based off principles she’d learnt from her family, community and homeland Ghana.
“…we talk about integrity and doing the right thing and kindness, and all these things that are so right, and I was sitting there, and I knew immediately it was the right thing to do because I had the chance to make a difference in someone else’s life…”
Verda Annan hopes to be a medical expert in future. Her dream? To better aid in the disparity in access to good health care in not only Ghana and but the world over.

We salute Verda Annan. Her actions are proof of not only her ethics but also of her humanity and altruism.
