Black girls are killing it all over the world and showing the world that Africa deserves a place on the global fashion and beauty map.
Models of African descent, Adut Akech, Adwoa Aboah and Adesuwa Aighewi are in contention for this year’s Model of the year at the 2019 Fashion Awards.
Organizers of the awards, the British Fashion Council announced the nominations through a press release earlier during the week.
The awards it said was a platform to appreciate “exceptional individuals whose imagination and creativity has broken new ground in fashion” . According to the release, winners will be announced at a ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall in London on 2nd of December, 2019.
Supermodel, Naomi Campbell and ardent enthusiast of the African continent will also receive the Fashion Icon Award, with BFC chief executive Caroline Rush saying in a statement, “Naomi represents female empowerment, activism and glamour and her voice is used for great impact.”
Speaking to the CNN, Nigerian- American model, Adesuwa Aighwei who also has Chinese and Thai ancestry revealed how she felt when her name was mentioned.
“It feels great to be nominated for this award, because it means hard work really does pay off,” Aighewi said. “Through modeling, I try to guide the light on me towards Africa and all the glory it has to offer, in order to showcase my home as light that it is to the world — so I want to thank the British Fashion Council for acknowledging that.”
“It’s an honor to be named alongside the other four nominees, especially Adwoa, whom I’ve always admired, and Adut, who is the most inspiring of them all,” she added.
Adwoa Aboah and Adut Akech have both won the award in recent years.It’s expected that one of these African models will walk away with the award in December.
