Disney unveils Iwájú, “first-of-its-kind” partnership with an entertainment company in Africa

If there’s one thing Africans love, it’s seeing the work of fellow Africans recognized worldwide and having the chance to portray our rich culture and traditions to the world.

Black Panther gave us the opportunity to do just that. ( P.S: we know you were excited when you heard your country’s name in the Marvel Movie). There seems to be more in the pipeline for African creators as Disney has now partnered with an African entertainment company known as Kugali to bring to your screens,  a collaborative science-fiction series: Iwájú, which will premiere on Disney+.

Iwájú is a Yoruba word which translates to Future in English. Disney has explained that the upcoming show is based in a futuristic Lagos, one of the major cities in. Nigeria.

This is the first time Disney is collaborating with an African entertainment company.  Kugali was founded by  Hamid Ibrahim, along with Nigerians Ziki Nelson and Tolu Olowofoyeku. These young men created the company Kugali to tell “stories inspired by African culture using comic books, art and augmented reality”.

Disney unveiled Iwájú and gave a first look at concept art to potential fans, showing an Afrofuturism-inspired universe as well as the characters of the series. Although no further information were given concerning those characters or the plot of the upcoming show, Disney announced that Iwájú will be available for streaming in 2022.

Congratulations to Kugali Media on this big collaboration.  We wait patiently for 2022.
