Dr Maya Angelou gets her own Barbie doll in an African print dress

Makers of the Barbie doll, Mattel have honoured poet and activist, Dr Maya Angelou with her own Barbie Doll ahead of Black History Month in February 👩🏾‍🦱✊🏾.

The miniature doll was styled in the Okra African wax textile in line with her style that was inspired by Ghana where she once lived and other countries in Africa.

She was accessorised with a headwrap, a golden ring, watch, earrings, and a bracelet as the doll holds a replica of the writer’s memoir, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.

Dr Angelou who died in 2014 was honoured by the doll makers for her impact, history and activism as part of Barbie’s ‘Inspiring Women collector’ series

Barbie dolls launched the initiative in 2018 and have honoured nine leading women whose work have inspired the next generation. The new Barbie doll makes Dr. Angelou the tenth public figure to join the series.

In a statement, Mattel said it was committed to spotlighting black female role models and change-makers through the collection.

“Our efforts include a commitment to spotlight more Black role models who are female, and now, we are introducing a doll that honours Dr. Maya Angelou, author and activist who used her voice and unique writing style to connect with people and inspire generations,” a portion of the release read

“Dr. Maya Angelou had a multi-hyphenated career and numerous awards and accolades, including over 50 honorary doctorates and a Presidential Medal of Freedom. Nominated for a National Book Award in 1970, her autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings continues to move readers around the world today.”
