10 Photos from Bozoma Saint John-Watson’s wedding that prove Ghana knows how to throw a party

There are weddings, and then there are unions that feel like history folding in on itself.

When Bozoma Saint John-Watson married Keely Watson in Accra on August 21, the couple didn’t simply plan a celebration, they staged a return.

The Akan ceremony was hosted at the residence of former Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo. It unfolded over a full day of ritual, color, and reunion. Nearly a thousand guests attended, with roughly 250 flown in from the U.S. and U.K.

The couple wore Kente cloth commissioned specifically for the occasion, Goba Kente and Naana Adobea for the ceremonial dress, an heirloom fabric woven over months in the town of Bonwire.

Guests, dressed in a riot of traditional patterns at the couple’s request, watched as Ghanaian artist KiDi performed his song “Odo” for the first dance while Efya serenaded the couple to other beautiful songs.

Bozoma said she and Keely deliberately steered clear of typical American wedding staples — there would be no Electric Slide here, only the rhythms of home.

As Bozoma put it, the ceremony unfolded exactly as Akan tradition dictates: family negotiations concluded before the bride even entered the room, her final “yes” arriving as the culmination of a process bigger than the two people at its center.

Her daughter, Lael, sat beside her grandmother throughout, a quiet witness rather than a bridal-party participant, a distinction rooted in the ceremony’s structure rather than convention.

The exclusive photos shared with US Magazine celebrate the beautiful event in 10 images

1. Three Generations of Ghanaian Beauty

My daughter Lael sat beside my mother throughout, not as part of a bridal party in the Western sense, but as a witness. That distinction mattered to me. — Bozoma

2.

Getting dressed for the ceremony felt like putting on centuries of history. My Kente was ten yards, woven with gold thread in reds, oranges, greens and blues. —Bozoma

3. Kente Shoes made by Louboutin

Christian Louboutin made my shoes himself in his Paris atelier, using the same Kente fabric as my dress. He set red Swarovski crystals into the sole so they’d catch the light from behind. —Bozoma

4. President Akufo-Addo stood in as her dad

The ceremony took place at President Akufo-Addo’s home. He stood in for my father, who couldn’t travel. It’s actually outrageous when I think about it. —Bozoma

5. After the bride price was accepted, the jubilation begins

Once the negotiations were complete and I gave my consent, the drums started, and the women began cheering. I felt the weight of that moment the second I walked in. —Bozoma

6.

For the reception, I changed into a piece by Mimmy Yeboah, who has made nearly every couture look I’ve worn on the show. —Bozoma. My suit incorporated strips of Kente into a Western silhouette, designed with Ilbert Sanchez of Fedu. —Keely

8. The fashion from the guests was chefskiss

It was a full day of ritual, colour and reunion, with nearly a thousand guests in attendance, roughly 250 of them flown in from the U.S. and U.K.
