There are weddings, and then there are unions that feel like history folding in on itself.

When Bozoma Saint John-Watson married Keely Watson in Accra on August 21, the couple didn’t simply plan a celebration, they staged a return.

The Akan ceremony was hosted at the residence of former Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo. It unfolded over a full day of ritual, color, and reunion. Nearly a thousand guests attended, with roughly 250 flown in from the U.S. and U.K.

The couple wore Kente cloth commissioned specifically for the occasion, Goba Kente and Naana Adobea for the ceremonial dress, an heirloom fabric woven over months in the town of Bonwire.

Guests, dressed in a riot of traditional patterns at the couple’s request, watched as Ghanaian artist KiDi performed his song “Odo” for the first dance while Efya serenaded the couple to other beautiful songs.

Bozoma said she and Keely deliberately steered clear of typical American wedding staples — there would be no Electric Slide here, only the rhythms of home.

As Bozoma put it, the ceremony unfolded exactly as Akan tradition dictates: family negotiations concluded before the bride even entered the room, her final “yes” arriving as the culmination of a process bigger than the two people at its center.

Her daughter, Lael, sat beside her grandmother throughout, a quiet witness rather than a bridal-party participant, a distinction rooted in the ceremony’s structure rather than convention.
