Mother of ex-President JJ Rawlings celebrates 100th birthday

It’s not every day someone turns 100 years in the world and so it isn’t surprising that everyone seems to be amazed at the feat Madam Victoria Agbotui has chalked.

Madam Agbotui is the mother of Ghana’s former president and head of state J.J Rawlings, who himself is in the very pink of health. A native of Dzelukope near Keta in the Volta Region, Victoria was born on the 9th of September 1919 which makes today 100 years since she was born. Photos that have been shared on social media spots her in a white garment as she relaxed in an armchair surrounded by family and friends.

Madam Victoria first entered Ghana’s public space in the 1970’s when her son Flt. Lt J.J Rawlings took over the reins of government in a coup d’etat. Prior to that, she was a head caterer at Ghana’s State House. She’s known for raising her son as a single mother and a strict disciplinarian who made sure she attended the best schools in the country.

She had not been seen in public for a longtime until last year when rumours were rife about her death after a short illness. However, the ex-president’s communications debunked such rumours calling them ‘unfounded’and ‘untrue’
