5 travel tips according to the travel bloggers who actually do it on a budget in Ghana

You do not need deep pockets to see this country properly. You need the right people to follow, and a few of Ghana’s own travel creators have already figured out where the money actually needs to go.

There is a version of travel that gets sold to us constantly online, the infinity pools, the private drivers, the curated itineraries that cost more than a month’s rent.

And then there is the version that Kofi Dotse, Akosua Shirley, Tori Kubu, andRyamchouu_travels have quietly been building for years, one that proves you can see the best of Ghana, the coastlines, the caves, the waterfalls, the half-forgotten nature reserves, without draining your account in the process.

Between the four of them, they have mapped out almost every corner of budget travel in this country, from what a tent costs on the beach to what a road trip to Liberia actually adds up to in cedis.

Here is what they have figured out, and what you can borrow from each of them the next time you are planning to get away.

1. Camp More Than You Book Hotels

Travel blogger Akosua Shirley strongly advocates camping over booking a resort. Her advice is simple: more people should be pitching a tent along Ghana’s coastline instead of defaulting to a hotel room every time. It cuts the cost of a getaway significantly, and a solid weekend off the grid does not need to come with a hotel price tag attached to it.

2. Build a Half-Day Itinerary Instead of a Full Vacation

Kofi Dotse has built a following around exactly this kind of trip: affordable, accessible half-day itineraries that pack in nature and culture without needing days off work or a big budget. Think Shai Hills Resource Reserve for wildlife and landscape, a stop at a local museum for heritage on a low entry fee, and a scenic push toward Akosombo for a boat cruise on the Volta Lake. It is a whole trip’s worth of experience compressed into an afternoon.

3. Eat Local, Not Touristy

Tori Kubu’s advice is to focus on local street food markets and affordable neighborhood haunts instead of the restaurants built for visitors. Chop bars, street food vendors, and night markets will feed you well for a fraction of what a sit-down spot charges, and you often get a more honest taste of the place in the process.

4. Get the Real Numbers Before You Book

Ryamchouu_travels has built a name around transparent, real-time cost breakdowns, road-tripping to Liberia for roughly 4,045 GHS all in, or laying out what a Mole National Park safari actually costs depending on whether you go solo or as part of a group. Instead of guessing what a trip will run you, the tips are always broken down to the cedi, from entry fees to lodging. It takes the guesswork out of budgeting and makes it easier to plan a trip you can actually afford before you commit to it.

5. Slow Down

Rushing through a checklist of attractions means paying for transit and entry fees over and over. Staying longer in fewer places cuts that cost down and, more often than not, gives you a better trip anyway.
