This is what contemporary photographer, Mel Arthur’s debut exhibition ‘Nyɛ Kɛ Wɔ’ looked like

For his first exhibition as a solo artist, contemporary Ghanaian photographer, Mel Arthur, broached the topic of family, fashion and time by juxtaposing these elements in ‘Nyɛ Kɛ Wɔ’.

‘Nyɛ Kɛ Wɔ’ which is Ga for Yesterday and Tomorrow is inspired by the women in his family who raised him. The exhibition showcases his specialty as an artist who document youth culture and the themes that influences it.

The exhibition kicked off on Friday, 23rd Augusted curated by at the Ariasville , Airport Residential and was curated by Lee with support from the Mel Arthur Experience team consisting of stylists, art director and PR from Braperucci.Africa.

It was a nostalgic experience as guests walked through the portraits with Osibisa music and other popular music that earmarked the 90’s played in the background.

Suzzy Williams, Mzbel and other male pop-stars like LL Cool J, 2-Pac, P-Diddy are all major influences in the exhibition. Modern fashion heavily influenced by ‘Returnee’ uncles from Hamburg and the Bronx who wore baggy clothing, knock-off jewelry and beanie hats with swag and panache are also featured.

In an interview with Braperucci.Africa, Mel who doubles as our website’s co-founder said the exhibition was a celebration of family, life and fashion.

“Basically the whole exhibition is to highlight the old fashion trends of our parents and how we are as a new generation is carrying on the baton unknowingly. Our style is more accessorized to meet modern tastes but the foundation of our aesthetics is borrowed heavily from the adults in our life. In short, we are our parent’s children” he said.

Yaw Pare, Amarachi Nwosu, Larry Bonchaka, Major Skyscraper and other Ghanaian artists have attended the show since its opening.

The exhibition ends on the 30th August.
