5 facts you should know about the queen of hats, Velma Owusu-Bempah

Ghanaian milliner and accessories designer, Velma Owusu Bempah is celebrating a new age today, 13 January 2020.

The mother, wife, sister, principal, and philanthropist is celebrated for her iconic work in the field of hats and accessories which as earned her the enviable position as Ghana’s queen of hearts for both men and women.

Despite the number of achievements under her belt, most people do not know who Mrs Velma Owusu-Bempah really is, so we’ve penned 5 important things you should know about the C.E.O of Velma Millinery and Accessories.

1. Origins

Velma is a Jamestown girl and is the daughter of Ghanaian archaeologist and academician, Leonard Brighton Crossland and his wife Mrs Sarah Crossland of Sarah’s fabrics. Velma started her formative years in Laterbiokoshie with her grandmother, parents and other siblings including her younger sister, fashion designer, Ophelia Crossland and her twin brother.

2. Education

Velma is an old girl of St. Mary Girls Secondary, University of Ghana Business School and the Central St. Martins College of Arts and design.

3. Career

She started her self-named brand in 2005 and has made hats and accessories for high profile personalities including, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, Senator Florence Ita Giwa, Second Lady of Ghana, Samira Bawumia, Nicole Ari Parker, Anita Erskine, Sandra Ankobiah, Juliet Ibrahim, Shirley Frimpong- Manso, Joselyn Dumas, Kofi Okyere Darko, mother of Beyonce, Tina Knowles Lawson.

4. Hobbies

She loves travelling, gardening and cooking. She also passionate about philanthropy.

5. Family

She is married to her university sweetheart and they have two kids. She has no connection to the popular Ghanaian prophet, Rev Owusu-Bempah.
