57-year-old Elizabeth Yamoah makes history as she completes B.E.C.E

The oldest candidate in the 2020 Basic Education Certificate Examination (B.E.C.E) has graduated successfully.

57-year-old Elizabeth Yamoah who is a student of the Odoben Presbyterian Junior High School became the talk of the news when she joined her colleagues nationwide to sit for the exams.

A farmer by profession, Madam Yamoah said she enrolled in Junior High School in 2017 after the government introduced the Free Senior High School policy.

According to her, the policy along with encouragement from her adult children informed her decision to go back to school after she dropped out in Class 4.

“I walked straight to Odoben Presbyterian Junior High School in 2017 and was welcomed by Mr Samuel Quaye, the Headteacher of the school when I informed him of my intention to attend school,” Madam Yamoah told the media.

On Friday, 18th September 2020, Auntie Lizzy who is a mother of 4 with 5 grandchildren successfully completed the 3-year course and celebrated the occasion with her classmates.

In a new photo that is trending on social media, she is spotted with a bottle of champagne and powder all over her body as a sign of jubilation.

Her feat has been commended by many who see it as proof that it is never too late to pursue your dreams.

“We should all support her progress beyond Junior Secondary School to how far she wants to go,” Ken Ashigbey of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications wrote on Twitter.

Madam Elizabeth Yamoah wants to be a nurse in the future and plans to attend Senior High School soon.
