The Burial of Kojo and Azali are the first Ghanaian movies to be selected for the Golden Globes and Oscars

It’s an exciting time to be a Ghanaian and a creative as the world turns its eyes on the quality of work that is churned out from this 30 million population.

Every week seems to have some exciting news of Ghanaians being recognized for the good work they do and this week is no different.

Two Ghanaian movies, Azali and the Burial of Kojo have been submitted to the Oscars and the Golden Globes respectively for nomination.

Azali which is Ghana’s first entry to the Oscars is yet to received the nod in to the International Feature Film category at the event which is slated for the 9th of January 2020.

Sadly, Nigeria’s only submission into the same awards scheme, Lionheart was rejected by the Academy due to their failure to abide by certain requirements of the awards.

According to GHMOVIEFREAK website, the movie tells the story of a 14-year-old girl from a small village in Northern Ghana who escaped an arranged marriage to a 70-year-old farmer.

She finds herself on a Burkina Faso-bound trafficking truck and was eventually saved. Now she has to choose between surviving in Accra and going back to the North.

Ghanaian director, Samuel “Blitz” Bazawuke’s “The Burial of Kojo” is also in the running for a Golden Globe nomination. Essence magazine said it was “the first-ever film from Ghana to be considered for a nomination.”

WHAAAAAAT!!!![The Burial of Kojo] is up for a Golden Globe Nomination. First ever for Ghana. Just Wow!!!” wrote on micro-blogging site, Twitter after the list was released.

Acquired by Array, the company of Award-winning director, Array Duvenay, the movie tells the story of two brothers through the eyes of a gifted girl who travels beautiful lands that exist between life and death.

We wish the two movies up for selection all the best.
